Penthrox Methoxyflurane or often referred to as the green whistle, is an analgesic or pain-relieving device used by medical practitioners, the defence forces, ambulance paramedics, sports clubs and surf lifesavers, first responders and medics to administer emergency pain relief. It is popular in remote first aid locations like mine sites and the mining sector as a simple, non-addictive and easy to administer pain management option. Making it an excellent choice for situations where a fast-acting and uncomplicated method of pain relief is required.

This unit of competency, PUAEME008 Provide pain management, involves the skills and knowledge required to administer restricted analgesics like the green whistle to provide pain management. Basic numeracy and literacy skills are needed to complete this course.

Access to a computer with the internet, as well as basic computer skills, is required for completion of this unit.

The Assessment Process

We use a range of assessment methods to gather evidence of your knowledge and applied skills for this unit. The assessment methods may include multiple choice questions, short written answers and practical activities. On enrolment in, you will be provided with access to International Paramedic College’s course learning materials; it is expected that you have read and understood the content before starting the assessments. Full information about the assessment requirements and course content is available here.

We will ask you to complete some knowledge base questions online after you have read the learning materials. You will then be required to upload some work place documents about how you use analgesia in your workplace, so we can assess you using as correctly as per your protocols and procedures. If you don’t have a workplace or these documents, we can provide generic examples for you to work from. You will complete two practical demonstrations via video on how to administer analgesia compliant with protocols and procedures.

On enrolment, you will be provided with a login to our student portal to access online assessment tasks. We understand that this may not suit everybody, so this unit may be completed face to face on-site in a workshop for groups.

Course Prerequisites

Student’s attending the PUAEME008 Provide pain management course must hold a current statement of attainment in Provide first aid. (Copy of current certificate to be provided at the time of enrolment)

Student’s must also be at least 18 years of age at the time of attendance.

Certificate Validity

The PUAEME008 Provide pain management certificate is valid for 1 year. Employer organisations recommend annual refresher training.

Certificate Renewal Requirements

This certificate requires to be renewed after 12 months of completion.

Provide pain management

This unit is especially relevant for Occupational First Aid course participants. It is designed to give the skills and knowledge required for the use of Penthrox (green whistle) in pre-hospital care.

Participants must ensure they research the legalities of carrying and using this medication in their specific state. Each state has their requirements, and it may not be legal to carry or use this medication as a first-aider in your state. You will produce a portfolio of requirements as part of the assessment tasks in this course.

Reasonable Adjustment – Learning difficulties

Enrolment in this training requires participants to provide details on any learning or physical difficulties which may impact on their training outcomes. This may include any language, literacy, or numeracy issues.

Students may also discuss any special needs with your assessor, who may be able to make any required, reasonable adjustment to the assessments to meet these needs. If there are any physical requirements, they will be noted below.

Entry Requirements

If you don’t have a training device or expired stock of the Penthrox Methoxyflurane inhaler. You will need to purchase a Penthrox Methoxyflurane Training Pack prior to assessment, which comes as a single unit pack and is available on our website here.

HLTAID011 Provide First Aid Current certificate

Participants under the age of 18 are required to provide a consent form completed by their legal guardian when they attend training.

Requirements for Completion

You must complete 100% of this training and satisfactorily complete all the competency-based assessment tasks.

Certification and Course Validity

After you successfully complete the online training and assessment activities, you will be issued a Nationally Accredited Statement of Attainment in PUAEME008 Provide pain management. The certification is valid for one (1) year from the date of issue.

Our comprehensive student management system will send you a reminder message about 1 month before your certificate is due to be renewed.

Unique Student Identifier Number (USI)

From 1 January 2015, anyone undertakes nationally recognised training delivered by a Registered Training Organisation will need to have a Unique Student Identifier (USI). If you have not yet applied for a USI, you will have to do so before attending training with us. To apply or to check if you already have a USI number is a quick and painless online process at the Australian Government website https://www.usi.gov.au/. Follow the prompts as a student. If you require help in obtaining one, please contact the office. If you are unable or choose not to provide a USI, or have an exemption granted under the Student Identifiers Act 2014, then your training outcome will not be recorded on your USI account and will not be available in future years as part of the authenticated USI transcript service.
