The course covers identifying manual task hazards, risk assessments and use of mechanical aids. Upon completion of this course, learners will have an understanding of the risks associated with manual tasks, and safe work practices to reduce the risk of injury.
Safework Australia has identified manual handling injuries as a major occupational health and safety issue. These types of injuries can occur when workers lift, lower, push, pull, carry or move objects manually. This is what will increase the risk of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) like back pain, sprains, strains and fractures.

Safework Australia Manual Handling Training
Manual handling injuries are one of the leading causes of workers’ compensation claims in Australia. In 2019-2020, there were over 23,000 workers’ compensation claims for MSDs caused by manual handling. MSDs are particularly common in the construction, healthcare, manufacturing and transport. industries.
To help prevent manual handling injuries, Safework Australia recommends that risk assessments and control measures are used. Mechanical aids, lifting equipment and training workers in ensuring that loads are properly balanced and stable. This course is designed to teach these skills.
This course provides information and training on how to properly lift and carry loads, how to use mechanical aids and equipment, and how to maintain good posture and body mechanics, but principally to avoid lifting, if possible.
By taking these steps, employers can help to prevent manual handling injuries in the workplace and create a safer and healthier working environment for their employees.

Entry Requirements
While there are no prerequisites for this course, you will need to have sufficient English language skills to complete the competency based first aid training.
Participants under the age of 18 are required to provide a consent form completed by their legal guardian.

Students will be required to undertake online pre-course work before completing practical activities. The 3 practical activities/case studies involve uploading completed documents and reports from the templates we provide as part of the assessment or completing an online equivalent.

Requirements for completion of manage first aid services
You must complete 100% of the training course and satisfactorily complete all the assessment tasks. If you feel you may need some support to complete the learning or assessment tasks, either because of a literacy issue, a learning difficulty or a physical disability, please let us know.
