This qualification was formerly known as a paramedic diploma called the Diploma of Paramedical Science and reflects pre-hospital and out-of-hospital workers employed to provide patient assessment, healthcare, and transport services. These workers possess clinical skills and theoretical knowledge and provide clinical assessment and pre-hospital and out-of-hospital interventions to patients in an emergency, including providing advanced skills in life support. This qualification applies to various roles within the health care and patient transport system around Australia. Developed in consultation with industry to meet a growing demand for discipline specialists from the vocational sector, and can provide a pathway for qualified paramedics to pursue a bachelor of Paramedic Science at University.
The one constant in emergency medicine is change
“Learning to be a medic at this level is not about learning how to use a specific piece of equipment. Equipment constantly changes and evolves, even between worksites. It is learning to apply a skill set or a template over the job and work your way through the routine you have learnt. It sounds funny, but learning to be a medic is learning a series of routines because all jobs have the common elements that need to be dealt with. If you get frustrated by change, then this is not a career for you, as evidence-based practice and new equipment drives changes in emergency medicine. We will develop a base of knowledge for you by completing the 17 units, then show you a systematic approach to patient management that incorporates a change mentality.”Craig Nolan.

Practical Skills Training
The HLT51020 Diploma of Emergency Health Care includes160hrs of clinical placement which we can help for you organise where you live with a local medical service, or you may already have options to organise yourself at your workplace. International Paramedic College Australia can run practical workshops located in the capital cities and selected regional locations around Australia.
Substantial discounts are offered on our diploma course when you can come to us for your 4-day practical workshop in Ballina NSW. It is just near Byron Bay, and we have an Airport with several direct flights every day. The savings in course fees allow you to come to us and still save money. The Practical Course duration is shortened by attendance at practical webinars and zoom sessions designed to have you primed for your practical work. (we used to call them Paramedic Primers in Ambulance Service NSW)
Why a 4 Day Face-to-Face Practical
We run our practical courses over a shorter time frame because we do a paramedical course primer before your attendance. We used to do this in Ambulance NSW to prepare trainees to “Hit the ground running” when they attend the practical courses. It was called a paramedic primer in those days. We also use a small group team format.
Learning to use various pieces of equipment is not difficult. Equipment continually changes, so learning when to use certain equipment is more important. (I have lost track of how many variations in leg splints and monitors etc I have seen over 40 years). The kit constantly changes, learning how to interpret it is what is essential. You can read more about our philosophy of paramedic training here.
We give you a lot of pre course work to complete on protocols procedures and pharmacology (different drugs that medics may administer) so you know them before you arrive at “face to face” training. We run a series of online webinars and live Q&A sessions with experienced clinical paramedics free of change before your attendance at practical training. Paramedical training is about learning a series of routines, like a template you can layer over any situation to provide you with a systematic approach to any patient management situation. Once you learn this approach, it is simple to apply it in any emergency call.
Our live interactive webinars cover the important aspects of developing the routines and equipment in your skills manual textbook
