Online Learning

What is this unit?

This unit focuses on developing practical airway and ventilation skills for use in CPR situations. It covers proper pocket-mask application, airway management techniques, and considerations for patients with potential spinal injuries.

Why it matters

Effective ventilation is critical during CPR. Achieving a proper mask seal, selecting the correct airway approach, and understanding spinal injury considerations can significantly improve patient outcomes. This unit builds confidence in using a pocket mask correctly, reducing ventilation errors, which is essential for CPR and first aid.

What you’ll learn

You will learn two pocket mask application techniques, how to achieve an effective seal and improve mask fit, key airway management approaches including spinal injury considerations, and correct pocket mask use in adult and child CPR.

How you’ll be assessed

Assessment is conducted through practical demonstration of airway and ventilation techniques. You will be required to correctly apply a pocket mask, achieve an effective seal, manage the airway appropriately, and demonstrate safe ventilation in simulated adult and child CPR scenarios.

Practical benefit

Upon completion, you will have the hands-on skills to confidently manage airways and deliver effective ventilation using a pocket mask. These competencies enhance your CPR capability and improve your readiness to respond safely and effectively in real-world emergencies.
