What to do until the ambulance arrives
Here is a list of 5 things you should do in an emergency while you are waiting for the ambulance to arrive
1. Stay calm and think sensibly – First aid is common sense, you just have to stay calm enough to have it.
2. Manage any hazards to yourself the patient or others – Fools rush in where angels fear to tread, look around. Don’t have tunnel vision.
3. If unresponsive and breathing OK, manage the unconscious patients’ airway by log rolling them into the recovery position
4. If unresponsive and not breathing, commence CPR
5. If responsive, assess the patient and use your first aid skills to treat any other injuries
The 10 vital lifesaving first aid skills will help you in an emergency situation to manage a patient until the ambulance arrives, but they are not a substitute for good emergency first aid and CPR training.
Remember to call 000 for an Ambulance as soon as possible to get help coming to you as soon as possible. A phone app like emergency plus will help to geolocate you for emergency services in Australia.
