How often do you need to renew your first aid certificate?
Every three years. Your HLTAID011 Provide First Aid certificate stays valid for three years from the date you complete it, which is the interval most Australian workplaces follow.
That cycle comes from Safe Work Australia, whose model code of practice recommends first aid qualifications be renewed every three years so first aiders stay current as best practices change. No legislation names a specific interval, though, so your employer or industry body is the one who sets what you actually need. Childcare, construction and high-risk sites often work to shorter cycles than three years.
Note that the CPR unit that comes with your first aid certificate expires once a year, which surprises a lot of people when it’s time to renew.
Why your CPR certificate expires before your first aid one
Completing HLTAID011 with IPC earns you two units of competency, including the HLTAID011 Provide First Aid and the HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. The CPR unit is a required part of the first aid course, though they’re not the same unit.
Your first aid unit stays valid for three years, while the CPR unit lasts 12 months. The Australian Resuscitation Council recommends refreshing CPR skills every year because compression technique fades faster than knowledge of bandaging or how to treat burns, also because it is an invasive intervention which the first aider needs to be proficient in performing.
That’s why your workplace might be asking you to renew your CPR certificate even if you got your first aid certificate just last year. If that’s the case, the first aid certificate is still valid, it’s just the CPR component within it that you need to renew.
Can you renew your first aid certificate online?
Only partly. You can go through all the theory online, though you can’t be assessed as competent without physically demonstrating the skills to a trainer. IPC delivers HLTAID011 as five and a half to eight hours of self-paced reading, then a 4.5-hour practical session.
That practical session is where you’ll be assessed. You’ll perform two minutes of uninterrupted CPR on adult and infant manikins, use an AED, and work through scenarios involving bleeding control, bandaging, burns, fractures, asthma and anaphylaxis. A trainer will observe you and sign off on each skill.
Anyone advertising a fully online first aid certificate is likely selling you a version of the course that is not nationally recognised, so your workplace may not accept it.
How to renew your first aid certificate
You renew by completing HLTAID011 again, since there’s no shorter version of the course. You’ll have to:
- Book before your certificate expires: You’ll find your expiration date on your statement of attainment. IPC emails a reminder ahead of time, though booking early gives you more choice of dates and venues.
- Complete the online theory: You’ll have access as soon as you’ve booked. You can spread the five and a half to eight hours of study material across as many sittings as you’d like.
- Attend your practical session: Block out 4.5 hours and bring photo ID. Your trainer will walk you through CPR, AED use, bleeding control, bandaging and scenarios like asthma, anaphylaxis and envenomation.
- Receive your statement of attainment: IPC issues both electronically once you’ve passed. First aid certificates last for three years, while CPR certificates last one year.
How much does first aid renewal cost?
HLTAID011 starts at $129 with IPC, though the final price depends on your location and session. Every booking includes a $35 non-refundable administration fee, rising to $45 when an employer pays by invoice.
Also keep in mind that you’ll have to pay a rebooking fee if you need to move your session within five business days of the date. If you miss the practical without notifying IPC, you’ll have to pay the full course fee again to rebook. If you let us know in advance, you can reschedule with a $35 re-enrolment fee.
Many workplaces cover first aid training for staff who hold the role, so check with your employer before paying yourself. Group bookings are also available if several people need to renew their first aid certificates at once, which is usually how larger workplaces handle it.
