Baby First Aid Course for Parents and Carers

Children aren’t small adults, and emergencies with babies and kids need a different approach. This practical session shows parents and carers what to do in the moments that matter, and you’re welcome to bring your baby.

What is the baby first aid course?

Our baby first aid course is a short, hands-on session for parents, grandparents and anyone who cares for babies, toddlers or young children. It’s a community course, built around the emergencies families actually face at home, at the park or in the car: a baby who isn’t breathing, a toddler choking on food, a fall, a burn.

Babies and kids respond differently to adults, so the techniques are different too. You’ll practise infant and child CPR on manikins, learn what to do when a child is choking and get practical tips from trainers with real pre-hospital experience. Sessions run face-to-face in Northern NSW, and parents can bring their baby along.

This is a non-accredited course. It isn’t a nationally recognised first aid certificate. If you need first aid for work in childcare, early learning or a school, you’ll need HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting instead.

  • Hands-on practice with baby and child manikins

Entry requirements

No prerequisites or prior first aid training needed.

  • Open to parents, grandparents, foster carers, nannies and anyone who looks after young children
  • You’re welcome to bring your baby to the session
  • The physical ability to kneel or work at floor level to practise on manikins
  • No online study or written assessment

What you’ll learn

The session covers emergency skills and practical tips for babies, toddlers and young children. You’ll learn how to:

  • Check a baby or child who is unresponsive and know when to call Triple Zero (000)
  • Perform CPR on a baby and on a child, and how this differs from adult CPR
  • Respond when a baby or child is choking
  • Open and protect a child’s airway
  • Manage injuries such as bleeding, burns and falls
  • Recognise medical emergencies, including breathing difficulties and severe allergic reactions
  • Respond to environmental emergencies, such as heat illness and incidents in or near water

Throughout the session, trainers explain why children aren’t small adults and what that means for how you help them.

Course units

This is a single practical session, not a unit of competency. Everything is covered face-to-face with a trainer, with plenty of time to practise and ask questions.

Hands-On Practical Session

What is this unit?

A 2 to 3 hour non-accredited practical session on first aid for babies, toddlers and young children. It is not a unit of competency.

Why it matters

Many emergencies with young children happen at home, and parents are usually first on the scene. Knowing the right technique for a baby’s size makes a real difference.

What you’ll learn

You’ll learn infant and child CPR, choking response, airway care, and how to manage injuries and medical emergencies in young children.

How you’ll be assessed

There’s no formal assessment. You’ll practise each skill on manikins and get feedback from your trainer.

Practical benefit

You’ll leave with practical skills and tips you can use straight away at home, plus a clear idea of when to call Triple Zero (000).

Delivery & assessment

Delivery format

  • One face-to-face practical session of about 2 to 3 hours
  • Hands-on practice with infant and child manikins
  • Small, relaxed groups where babies are welcome

Assessment method

There’s no formal assessment. Your trainer will watch you practise each skill and give feedback until you feel confident.

Before booking, read our student information and policies.
